Description of the initiative

"Living in the Shrinking Apennines" is a planning workshop addressed to students of the master's degree courses of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering (AUIC) of the Politecnico di Milano. Students enrolled in the third year of the bachelor degrees in Progettazione dell'Architettura (L-17) and Urbanistica: Città Ambiente Paesaggio (L-21) can apply for the call but their acceptance will be subject to limited availability.
The workshop aims to investigate the dynamics of shrinkage of the Apennines and elaborate design scenarios in a specific case-study affected by harsh dynamics of depopulation, decline and emptying. The workshop intends to investigate the construction of the project in a place whose habitability conditions are in crisis and the heritage is obsolete, abandoned and seems to be turning towards an inevitable ruderisation. The case-study chosen for the 2022 edition of the workshop is located in the Apennine territory of the province of Piacenza, specifically in Ebbio, a 16th-century rural settlement located in Bettola, in the Nure valley.
The Workshop will take place from Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 June 2022. The teaching activity will be carried out in some spaces made available by some inhabitants of the village.
The achievement of CFU and the completion of the activity are subject to the elaboration of a project and its presentation and discussion on the occasion of the final exhibition-seminar of the workshop to be held in Ebbio on Thursday June 30, 2022 in a public event joined by the Scientific Committee of AAiC, institutions and the local community.
The project will be developed in groups of 4/5 components and will be returned in A1 format posters with one or more maquettes. Students will be involved in preparing the exhibition which will take place all around the village of Ebbio.
