Description of the initiative

The Laboratory of Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics, associated with the course 056795 - HYDRAULICS, will develop in students the skills of problem solving applied to fluid-dynamics problems. They will learn how to face a complex case study of industrial hydraulics, selected from time to time by the teacher. For instance, one of the possible case studies, already considered in the past, is the fluid dynamic characterization of the Green Valve, a device for flow control and energy recovery patented by Politecnico di Milano (DICA.15.002.A; author: Stefano Malavasi). The students will analyze three different investigation approaches, underlining their strengths and limitations, and, above all, the potential of their integration: these are experimental testing, concentrated parameter modeling, and computational fluid dynamics. Lectures will involve a visit to the Hydraulics Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano and the use of two commercial codes, namely Simcenter Amesim and PHOENICS. The laboratory will be offered in presence in the Milano Leonardo Campus. The attendance to four slots out over five is required for obtaining the 2 credits.
