Description of the initiative

The Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics, associated with the course 083503 - Fluid Mechanics, will develop in students the skills of problem solving applied to fluid-dynamics problems. They will learn how to face a complex problem of industrial fluid dynamics: the characterization of the Green Valve, a device for the control and recovery of energy patented by Politecnico di Milano (DICA.15.002.A; inventor: Stefano Malavasi; www.polilink.polimi.it/en/green-valve/).

The students will analyze three different investigation approaches, underlining their strengths and limitations, and, above all, the potential of their integration: these are experimental testing, concentrated parameter modeling, and computational fluid dynamics. Lectures will involve the use of two commercial codes, namely Simcenter Amesim and PHOENICS.

The attainment of the learning outcomes will be assessed by the teacher during the classes, through discussion with the students. If possible, BSIM Engineering S.r.l. will be involved in the lectures related with the Simcenter Amesim software.
