Description of the initiative
The embedded systems are a specialized mix of hardware and software whose presence in the daily life is strongly pervasive. Before moving to volume production, it is necessary to perform a feasibility analysis both in terms of functionality as well as considering design constraints such as energy, cost or size. For these reasons, realizing a proof of concept is an important step prior to commit the architecture that will be considered for large scale production. Such "intermediate" systems are typically conceived to realize demos for the final customer or to perform scientific/academic investigations. The goal of this course is to show how it is possible to realize, at a reasonable cost, some prototypes whose characteristics and quality are closer to real realizations, by exploiting the off-the-shelf components typically used for the implementation of the embedded systems. The course encompasses 6+3 classes plus the realization of a project work, as detailed below:
- What is an embedded system, components for its realization,
- COTS based design flow of the hardware side of an embedded systems,
- Design and realization of a simple PCB,
- Realization of firmware for a microcontroller,
- API and user-friendly interfacing on a host PC,
- Recap and in-depth presentation of a real systems, including the analysis of cost, development time. Presentation of the project works,
