Description of the initiative

The recent developments of multimedia devices and editing tools, together with the proliferation of sharing websites, have made the acquisition, alteration, and diffusion of multimedia content relatively easy tasks. As a consequence, it is possible to download a huge amount of user-generated audio tracks, images and videos, but each of them has been potentially tampered with by anyone. It is then clear that the development of tools that enable the recovery of past history of multimedia objects in order to prove their origin and authenticity is more than an urgent necessity. In this course, we introduce the concept of blind multimedia forensics by focusing on a set of applications targeting all kinds of media (i.e., audio, images and video). We will learn how to detect which camera model has been used to shoot a picture, whether an audio track has been edited through the analysis of electronic network frequency traces, whether a video sequences suffered from some frame drops, as well as to face additional forensic questions.Students will learn the theoretical aspects behind each application, and how to implement the considered detectors in Python.
