Description of the initiative

The Cariplo research project "LONGEVICITY: Social Inclusion for the Elderly through Walkability" has the objective to study the cities of the future as characterized by the growing presence of long-lived and active citizens and by the need to design technologically advanced infrastructures, especially in view of the role that self-driving vehicles will have in this scenario.LONGEVICITY aims at supporting social inclusion and active aging of the population in urban contexts, analyzing the walkability (level of accessibility, comfort and safety for pedestrians) of two areas in the Metropolitan city of Milan: Rondò of Sesto area and Gorla-Crescenzago. The research activities provided for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of two areas of the Metropolitan City of Milan, which were also selected on the basis of the presence of two AUSER centers with which we conducted various research activities. At this stage of the project, we are organizing two co-creation workshops that will involve senior citizens, students and several experts to co-design solutions on the theme of "safety" (real and perceived) and the "attractiveness" of the places for our target (over 60).The ultimate goal is to outline possible design ideas to be implemented in the two different contexts in order to improve the neighbourhoods' walkability and (therefore) the social inclusion of the elderly population in Milan. The activity will expect the active participation of students, both physically in presence during the workshops and remotely finishing relevant tasks, creation of 2 project ideas/concepts and presentation of their ideas/concepts to the stakeholders involved.
