Description of the initiative

According to Paul Ricoer, one of the most influencing philosophers of the twentieth century, there is 'a close relationship between architecture and narrativity, where architecture is to space what storytelling is to time' (P. Ricoer, "Architettura e narratività", in Leggere la città. Quattro testi di Paul Ricoer, edited by F. Riva, Lit Edizioni 2013, p. 80).
Città Bene Comune. Reading, discussing, storytelling about the city is a cutting-edge learning way aiming to promote reading, discussing and critical thinking about issues of the city, the territory, the landscape and the relevant design cultures.

How this cutting-edge learning is organised
1. Participating in four meetings with the authors of four recent books on the themes indicated.
2. Discussing with an expert panel of discussants.
3. Reading one of the four publications (chosen by students).
4. Writing a short critical paper by the end of June 2021.

About which books and which authors
The first is on Wednesday 5th May 2021, at 6:00 p.m., with Arturo Lanzani, author of Cultura e progetto del territorio e della città (FrancoAngeli, 2020). The following is on Wednesday 12th May 2021, at 6:00 p.m., with Michele Manigrasso and his publication La città adattiva. Il grado zero dell'urban design (Quodlibet, 2019). On Wednesday 19th May 2021, at 6:00 p.m., Il principio territoriale (Bollati Boringhieri, 2020) by Alberto Magnaghi. Finally, on Wednesday 26th May 2021, at 6:00 p.m., Francesca Cognetti, Daniela Gambino and Jacopo Lareno Faccini, authors of Periferie del cambiamento. Traiettorie di rigenerazione tra marginalità e innovazione a Milano (Quodlibet, 2020).

How to obtain credits
By actively participating in the meetings, reading a book from those proposed and writing - by the end of June 2021 - a short critical essay showing the understanding of the key contents and their critical analysis. This essay will be sent to: oriana.codispoti@polimi.it
