Description of the initiative

The course aims to tackle computational fluid dynamics problems proposed by the students.
The aim of the course is to use the theory of computational fluid dynamics already learned in courses of their academic career and to apply it to concrete problems, identifying the opportunities and limits given by the available CFD tools.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to consciously deal with CFD analysis, applying the theoretical notions already known in the field.
The approach used will be to review the fundamental principles of computational fluid dynamics (already learned during other training courses), with particular attention to the evaluation of the reliability of the model created for the reproduction of the phenomenon considered.
Students will present the objectives of their project (both individually and in groups) during the first lessons, while in the last appointment they will present and discuss the results of their analysis.
The field of application of the projects can be proposed, here are some examples:
  • vehicle aerodynamics
  • dispersion of pollutants
  • wind energy
  • aerodynamics of bridges and buildings
  • HVAC
  • hydrodynamics
  • sailboat aerodynamics
The first lesson deals with the topics common to each computational fluid dynamics problem, defining the classification of the problem, how to choose the computation domain, the necessary equations, the grid independence study and the reliability of the results.
In subsequent appointments, the resolution of individual projects will be addressed, providing for collective moments and individual moments of project review.
The software used will mainly be Ansys Fluent and OpenFOAM, but other software is also welcome. For the analysis of the results we will use Paraview, Python, Matlab.
