Description of the initiative

IAAD (Istituto d'Arte Applicata e Design) DESIGN WORKSHOP is a synergistic workshop system that represents a moment of participated thought, whose aim is to invite students, professors, and cultural representatives to constructively confront the problems and opportunities of the community.

The XIII edition of the Design Workshops – from February 20th to 25th 2023 – has been planned in cooperation with Itinerari Paralleli and will focus on Sustainable Development Goals. The title of this edition is: "Be Brave, design Goals"
The SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals – are not only a political agenda and a matter of public policy, but they represent a common ground of understanding that must lead and direct us to a more sustainable and democratic community.
One week, five challenges, nine teams and one common vision: design new solutions to promote the United Nations' SDGs. Workshops are the opportunity to get in touch with new ideas, tools, means and experiences. Participants will meet young professionals and widen their role as designers. Workshops will be held in English language.
The workshops organized in the IAAD location of Turin are open to 3 master level students of Politecnico di Milano, with a Design background.

The 2030 Agenda, signed in 2015 by 195 UN countries – Italy among them, is based on fivekey concepts known as the "5Ps", which might be considered from a design perspective:
- People. Inequalities are the first evident obstacle to human progress. We're looking for solutions and projects that can promote equal access to resources (food, water, shelter) and inclusive opportunities despite who you are, where you come from and how much money you have!
- Planet. Everything we produce, use and throw away has an impact on the environment. As designers, are we doing enough to ensure sustainable lifestyles? From clothes to cars, objects or packaging, where can we improve solutions and lead the fundamental rush to give our planet hope?
- Prosperity. Life has never changed as quickly in terms of digital, technological and smart solutions. But is this true for everyone and everywhere? How can a digital culture support equal opportunities and help us reflect on the "human" face of technology?
- Peace. Now more than ever we know how people's lives can be put at risk by armed conflict and wars. It's not only politics that has the responsibility to find a solution. We have a responsibility as well to do our part and "give peace a chance". Which services, campaigns, digital and physical solutions can contribute in the process to prevent, resolve and rebuild before, during and after a conflict?
- Partnership. To achieve a better, sustainable and democratic society we need to work together in solidarity. How can the international community move to start significantly operating to secure these results?  Selected students will be allocated by the IAAD organizers in some of the following workshops according to a logic of cultural mix:
  • THE PO EMERGENCY: LET'S ACT AS MAKERS! (Planet, Sustainability). Team Leader: FABLAB_Fabrizio ALESSIO
  • REINVENT THE EVENT - FORMULA E (Planet, Mobility) Team Leader: Dario OLIVERO
  • CREATIVITY AND CONFLICT (People) Team Leader: Vladimir SOTO
