Description of the initiative

The main objective of the workshop is to enhance the soft skills of young designers, offering them the opportunity to 1) practice listening (to themselves and to others) activities, through storytelling and the construction of artifacts; 2) in the case of foreign students, practice the Italian language while in the case of Italian students play the role of peer tutor. The workshop will take place in partnership with the association Asnada (www.asnada.it). The activities will be aimed at the exchange and mutual knowledge of participants (Italian and foreign students of the School of Design, foreign students of Asnada, the school of Italian). The outcome of this workshop will be the production of artworks representing a collective vision of the city of Milan, then exposed in a final exhibition. Foreign students of both schools will be able to learn the Italian language through crafting, i.e. the activities of production of the artworks.Through the realization of miniatures related to important places of the past and present, the workshop, lasting 8 meetings, intends to explore the emotional bond between people and living/inhabiting. The production of artefacts will take place at Lab. Exhibit and Lab. Prototypies and it is based on recovering, rearranging and bringing back to new life waste materials. That said, using such materials works on the metaphor of the "useful" and the "useless", which mirrors the experiences of the people who immigrated in our territory from a foreign land. Moreover, through a final exhibition, it aims to restore the complexity of the journeys and of the individual weaving. Curated by a professional architect, the exhibition involves the construction of a real affective geography. A map of the world and a map of the city of Milan act as a collector of miniatures, while a system of suspended threads shows the paths of each participant. The workshop is organized as 5 half-day workshops, introduced by a preliminary meeting, and followed by a reflection meeting and a final exhibition. All the meetings will be conducted by a professional architect. The workshop is part of the programme of activities of the "Cascina 9" project, co-financed by Fondazione Cariplo (responsible: Francesca Piredda).
