International MantovArchitettura 2018 festival live
Open lectures with the world’s greatest architects. 40 events including exhibitions, conventions, conferences and workshops
The fifth edition of MantovArchitettura is underway: from 8 - 31 May 2018, leading architects from every part of the world will offer open lectures at historical landmarks across Mantova, Parma, Sabbioneta and Verona.
The international architecture festival will comprise 40 initiatives held in various prestigious locations, including exhibitions, conventions, conferences held by renowned international architects and workshops.
There are three highly anticipated exhibitions at this year’s event.
The first takes place on 8 May at 6pm with the opening of the Mantova Imago Urbis exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale: 100 images selected by Marco Introni and Luigi Spinelli telling the story of the city.
9 May at 6.30pm, at the Casa del Mantegna, is the opening of the Josef Frank interprete di Leon Battista Alberti show (Josef Frank interprets Leon Battista Alberti), curated by Caterina Cardamone and Francesco Dal Co.
And on 11 May, at the Museo Archeologico, Il Cantiere della Metropolitana di Napoli (Construction site on the Naples underground) by Luigi Fregonese.
On this occasion, the new reconstruction of the Monumento Sarsinate, by Massimo Ferrari and Claudia Tinazzi, will open to the public.
The conferences will see the leading figures in international architecture exchange views with each other and with the public in various locations.location.
Events start on 9 May at 4:30pm with a lecture from top architect Kengo Kuma at the Teatro Bibiena. They continue on 11 May at 10:30am with João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Eduardo Souto de Moura discussing the architecture of Lisbon. Then it’s the turn of Stefano Boeri on 17 May at 6:30pm. On 22 May at the Tempio di San Sebastiano, a speech by Andrew Berman at 6:00pm, preceded at 2:30pm by João Mendes Ribeiro. Finally an unmissable meeting with Metro Arquitetos at 11:00am and Javier Corvalàn at 6:00pm, both events taking place on 29 May at the Tempio di San Sebastiano.
For three Saturdays, 12, 19 and 26 May, at the Museo di Castelvecchio - Carlo Scarpa’s masterpiece - Eduardo Souto de Moura, Guido Canali, and Elías Torres will discuss their own museum projects and designs.
On 16 May at 3:00pm, at the Teatro all’Antica, a discussion on Italian Architecture with Francesco Cellini, Andrea Ponsi, Gianmatteo Romegialli and Paolo Zermani.
This year’s MantovArchitettura is further enriched by an innovative teaching project which will give students the opportunity to explore new approaches to design methods. The esteemed festival guests will evaluate the work of students on the Laurea Magistrale course (equivalent to Master of Science) in Architectural Design and History at the Mantova Campus of the Politecnico di Milano, in their capacity as visiting critics, as part of the Final Workshop, “Old and New”, on the journey of Architectural Design in Historical Context.

MantovArchitettura is promoted and developed by the Mantova Campus of the Politecnico di Milano and its School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering, and ABC and DAStU Departments, within the framework of the UNESCO Chair scientific project “Architectural Preservation and Planning in World Heritage Cities”.
