Sixth annual meeting of the University Alliance of the Silk Road

Politecnico di Milano announces a number of important strategic actions

From 23 to 27 November 2020, the Politecnico di Milano hosted the sixth (virtual) annual meeting of the members of the University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR).

The Alliance, founded in 2015 by Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), is now a collaborative platform comprising about 150 universities, from countries distributed primarily along the Silk Roads, both terrestrial and maritime, connecting China to Europe.

The Politecnico di Milano, which currently chairs the Alliance, chose “Security for Society” as the topic of the latest meeting.

The meeting opened on 23 November with the Presidents’ Forum, introduced by our Rector, Ferruccio Resta. The presidents of the universities involved all took the floor, sharing their thoughts on how the current pandemic is affecting the future of academia.

The following three days saw a number of themed sessions, open to the general public, held by university professors and researchers from international organisations. The topics covered were those of Security for Natural Systems, for Cyber Space and for Public Health.

In particular, the session dedicated to security for natural systems was organised by Monica Riva, the Rector’s delegate for International Networks, and by Gabriella Bolzon, Supervisor of the Polimi-XJTU strategic project for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The seminar ended with a music video produced by the Politecnico student association, Polifonia.

The week of events rounded off with an Executive Committee Meeting, during which the future developments of the Alliance were discussed.

On behalf of the Politecnico, the Vice Rector for China, Giuliano Noci, and the Rector's delegate for the Polimi-XJTU strategic project, Sergio Pignari, announced a number of strategic measures:

1.      The launch of new collaboration activities between the Alliance’s universities, in particular in the field of research, with the organisation of regular webinars on strategic topics for the geographical area of the Silk Road;

2.      The launch of a Doctoral School of the University Alliance of the Silk Road;

3.      The organisation of workshops on key issues for the industry, with the aim of promoting collaboration between universities and industries, as well as between industries in different countries.

Starting in February, the Politecnico di Milano’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be offering a first series of monthly webinars on other aspects related to the topic of “Security for Society”. The schedule of webinars, open to everyone, will soon be available at
