Surgical masks and personal protective equipment

Politecnico has completed its support activities with manufacturers

In the last week of April, Politecnico di Milano's support activities for the conversion to the production of masks/gowns/PPE, which were closely bound to the emergency context, were closed.

During March and April, we carried out over 400 tests on materials for the production of surgical masks, and managed over 2000 contacts with materials and mask production companies. Some of the results of our analyses and the list of verified materials are published on this page.

A standard procedure to produce surgical masks is also published on the same page.

If you produce surgical masks with the materials listed in our Technical Note, you can apply for production and marketing in derogation from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, as provided by the art. 15 of the Cura Italia Decree of 17 March 2020. You can get the files with the test results to be included in the application, directly from the materials manufacturers or from your suppliers. The files issued by Politecnico di Milano must be completed with bioburden and biocompatibility analysis. The list of labs where testing is also provided in the Technical Note.

For the certification of surgical masks produced with materials not present in our Technical Note, we suggest that you follow the instructions of Confindustria Dispositivi Medici on: www.confindustriadm.it/emergenza-coronavirus/ or write to regulatory(at)confindustriadm.it.

A list of the laboratories where to carry out tests is published on the same page.

For certification of PPE masks (FFP2 and FFP3), we recommend that you contact the ItalCert centre on www.italcert.it  or writing to italcert(at)italcert.it.
