MakingMEV: prototyping a multiple ventilator for pandemic emergencies

Politecnico and Policlinico together for clinical innovation

In March 2020, the MEV - Ventilatore Multiplo d'Emergenza (Multiple Emergency Ventilator) project was born from the collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and Policlinico di Milano which, in the midst of the Covid-19 emergency, is characterised as a complete overhaul of emergency support for respiratory ventilation: the intention was to make available to the scientific and medical community - in a completely "open" perspective - the idea of a ventilator for multiple subjects, intrinsically safe, personalised for each patient.

MakingMEV is the first practical realisation of the MEV project. While the latter focused on designing the components and validating the operating principle, the new project aims to build a fully functional prototype of the ventilator, validate its functionality in the laboratory and analyse its realistic potential for transfer to the clinic.

The project, coordinated by Giuseppe Baselli, involves the collaboration of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.

MakingMEV is one of the 5 high social impact research projects of the Politecnico di Milano selected through the last edition of the Polisocial Awards to be financed by funds from the 5x1000.
