Alessandro Balducci  

Alessandro Balducci was born in Rome in 1954 and graduated with honours in Architecture from the Politecnico in 1978. In 1989, he obtained a PhD in Spatial Planning from the IUAV Venice-Polimi-Polito joint school. In 1992, he became Associate Professor of Urban Management at the University of Chieti and, in 2000, held the post of Full Professor of Urban Planning and Technology at the Politecnico di Milano. 

He has been Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University, the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, the University of Helsinki, MIT, Tongji University, and the University of Reims. He was also the coordinator of the PhD School in Spatial and Environmental Planning in 1998-1999, a lecturer at the Alta Scuola Politecnica, and UNESCO Chair in Architectural Preservation and Planning in World Heritage Cities. 

During his tenure as full professor, Alessandro Balducci authored 22 books, 42 chapters of books and 44 publications; acted as director, editor or member of the scientific/editorial boards of the world's leading urban planning journals; and took part in numerous working groups and advisory committees set up by, among others: World Economic Forum, OECD, European Commission, Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Public Works, MIUR, ANVUR, Lombardy Regional Government, Municipality of Milan, and the Province of Milan.

Throughout his career at the Politecnico di Milano, Alessandro Balducci has been a committed member of the University's various policy and governing bodies and held various important institutional positions. He was the Director of the Department of Architecture and Planning from 2002 to 2008, a member of the Politecnico's Board of Directors in 2009-2010, the Vice Rector of the Politecnico's Mantua campus in 2011-2012, the Politecnico's Executive Vice Rector from 2010 to 2015, and a member of the Academic Senate during the corresponding period.
