BSc in Product Design
The Bachelor's Degree Programme in Industrial Product Design prepares designers capable of conceiving and developing tangible, innovative products that respond to the needs of people, businesses, and contemporary production and social contexts. Designing a product means integrating functional, technical, aesthetic-formal, and communicative aspects to transform an idea into a feasible design solution. The programme provides a solid foundation in design disciplines, both from a theoretical and an operational perspective, equipping students with the methodology needed to address every stage of product development, from concept to executive definition.
The curriculum combines historical-critical, humanistic, scientific, and technological disciplines with tools for the physical and digital representation and modelling of products, ranging from graphic design and drawing to knowledge of materials, industrial processes, production constraints, and the role of AI in design practice. The degree prepares graduates to contribute to technical and design activities across product development, production, communication, and distribution, leading to employment in professional studios, companies, and manufacturing contexts in roles such as designer and product development technician.
The Industrial Product Design B.Sc. provides a solid foundational education in the field of design disciplines, both at the theoretical and operational levels. In particular, by the end of the course of study, students will have acquired knowledge of: the core methodological foundations required to work competently across all executive stages of industrial product design; the historical and critical disciplines related to design culture and the evolution of products; the humanities disciplines necessary for interpreting the social and cultural contexts into which designed products are introduced, ranging from semiotics to aesthetics, and from psychology to sociology; the tools and techniques related to the morphological, material, and functional representation of products, from freehand drawing to technical drawing and digital representation, from photography to the three-dimensional production of study models and product prototypes; techniques for the creation of digital images, the interpretation of visual languages, and the understanding of perceptual mechanisms; the scientific and technological competencies related to materials, their chemical-physical, performance, structural, and functional characteristics, the related transformation technologies, industrial manufacturing processes, and production constraints; and the economic and managerial aspects related to business contexts and markets, together with the economic feasibility analysis of products and the elements that define business coherence within design-driven innovation processes.
Graduates in Industrial Product Design are designers capable of developing industrial products by supporting companies and professionals from the initial idea through development and on to the definition of the product’s production and distribution aspects in the marketplace. This professional figure enters the professional system with executive-level skills and the ability to work effectively in teams. Graduates also possess the competencies required to assist in research activities and in the development of concepts.
They are able to work in collaboration with Research and Development departments and specialists during the product development phases, as well as with production technicians and experts. At the same time, they are able to interact with companies’ Marketing and Sales departments in order to identify market needs upstream in the process. Within the study programme, it is possible to activate specific thematic tracks focusing on areas that represent new frontiers in the development of design professions or strategic sectors for the growth of the national economy.
Graduates in Industrial Product Design may continue their studies in master’s degree programmes such as Integrated Product Design, Design & Engineering, and Product-Service System Design. Subject to admission requirements and evaluation of their academic background, graduates may also choose to pursue other master’s degree programmes or first-level specialised master’s courses.
