MSc in Digital and Interaction Design
The Master’s Degree in Digital & Interaction Design trains professionals specialized in the design and development of interactive artifacts, both digital and physical. The programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the integration of design, digital technologies, and electronics, with particular attention to user experience, usability, and technological innovation. Students learn how to conceive complex interactive solutions — products, interfaces, connected devices, and interactive environments — capable of effectively addressing the needs of contemporary contexts.
Admission to the Master’s Degree in Digital and Interaction Design is reserved for candidates holding a first-level degree (EQF 6) in the classes L-4, L-17, L-8, L-9, L-31, or another suitable qualification, provided that they have obtained at least 36 ECTS credits in the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors CEAR-08/D (formerly ICAR/13) and 09/IINF-05 (formerly ING-INF/05). In the case of curricular deficiencies, the Committee may require additional coursework before proceeding with the assessment of individual preparation.
A minimum weighted average grade of 23/30 (for Politecnico di Milano graduates) or 25/30 (for graduates from other Italian universities) is required.
Admission is based on the evaluation of a portfolio or thesis abstract, CV, motivation letter (and study plan for non-Polimi candidates) and placement in a merit ranking (maximum 100 points: 50 portfolio, 20 CV, 30 GPA; plus a 5-point bonus for the first-choice Master’s programme within the School of Design).
A minimum B2 level English language certification is mandatory.
Applicants holding a Bachelor’s Degree (EQF 6) or an equivalent qualification may apply, provided their academic background is consistent with the fields of design, architecture, engineering, or information technologies, and includes coursework equivalent to at least 36 ECTS credits in the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors CEAR-08/D and 09/IINF-05. Where direct correspondence of disciplinary sectors cannot be established, the academic record will be evaluated by the Programme Board; additional curricular requirements may be assigned if necessary.
Admission is subject to the assessment of the applicant’s individual preparation (portfolio, CV, motivation letter, and academic documentation), placement in the merit ranking, and possession of a minimum B2 English language certification in accordance with University requirements.
Application procedures and deadlines are specified in the Eligibility and Admission Requirements section of the University and School of Design websites.
The programme combines a solid theoretical foundation with practical and professional activities over two years. In the first year, students acquire core knowledge in interaction design, human and social sciences, and digital and engineering technologies; these competencies are applied through design studios and intensive workshops, often developed in collaboration with external partners. In the second year, students consolidate and specialize their skills through advanced design studios and a mandatory internship in a company or professional studio. Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on representation, prototyping, and testing of interactive solutions, with opportunities to personalize the study path through elective courses.
The Master’s Degree in Digital & Interaction Design equips graduates to enter the job market with advanced competencies in digital and interactive design. Graduates may work as digital designers, interaction designers, UX/UI designers, information architects, service designers, and developers of smart products and smart spaces, as well as in roles focused on innovation management within multidisciplinary teams.
Career opportunities are available in design studios, consultancy firms, technology companies, and public or private institutions, as well as through freelance practice or entrepreneurial initiatives. Graduates may also continue their academic path through PhD programmes or second-level master’s degrees.
