Descrizione dell'iniziativa

The initiative addresses sustainability in fashion as a systemic design and organizational governance challenge, linking internal power structures, decision-making metrics, and the construction of brand coolness. It draws on case studies of brands that integrate sustainability, culture, and identity to frame sustainability not as an additional communication layer but as the outcome of structural choices concerning processes, supply chains, and market positioning.

In the introductory module, models and tools are presented to interpret fashion organizations as socio-technical systems, highlighting the role of KPIs, decision hierarchies, and risk culture in enabling or constraining ethical practices. The workshop module is based on a simulation of decision-making scenarios (adoption of sustainable materials with increased costs, time constraints, investors’ expectations), in which students take on different organizational roles and collectively negotiate the outcome of decisions.

The final part is devoted to diagnosing the points at which sustainability loses influence within decision-making processes and to prototyping internal frameworks: new KPIs, collection approval rituals, redefinitions of brand coolness, and incentive mechanisms oriented toward the long term.

Lecturer’s profile: Gabriela Garcez Duarte is a Brazilian designer and researcher based in Curitiba, Brazil. She holds a PhD in Design from the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) and is a faculty member at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR), where she teaches in Design programs and postgraduate courses focused on coolhunting, strategic design, and sustainability. Her experience combines fashion collection design, trend research, retail and buying with academic research on green economy, strategic design, and product–service systems for sustainability in fashion. She conducts action research with fashion companies, working on transitions towards more sustainable models and on how organizational culture shapes ethical and market choices.
