DIPARTIMENTO DI DESIGN
Description
The course curriculum consists of 6 training modules. These modules include lectures with the possibility of short project activities. Specifically, there will be: - Theoretical lectures: aimed at providing specific knowledge on the course topics; - Masterclasses: aimed at connecting students with expert professionals to discuss cutting- edge topics; - Workshop: design experience to apply the acquired knowledge to a real brief, proposed by a partner company or organization. The 6 modules cover the following topics: - Design of urban public spaces: themes and challenges of designing for the contemporary city. - Public space and participation: processes and methods. - Public space as a lever for urban branding: communication, events, and temporary installations. - Materials and technologies for public space: trends and experiments. - Project development: management and economic evaluations. - Design for social impact: enterprise, sustainability, and territorial development. The course is delivered in English on a part-time basis. It is conducted online (with live lectures) except for one workshop module, which is held in person in Milan at the POLI.design headquarters (in case of inability to attend in person, the workshop can be replaced with an equivalent activity proposed by the faculty, to be carried out remotely). No internship is provided. The final exam will focus on the results achieved during the workshop (or in the alternative activity).
Educational project
The course aims to equip professionals with the skills to design public spaces, promoting sustainable development in contemporary cities. In this context, design operates at the scale of urban proximity, focusing on the "human scale" of open spaces, their amenities, services, usage modes, and the relationships they foster. Design employs tools, methods, and approaches to enhance the physical, perceptual, and sensory aspects of cities, revitalizing urban public spaces and contributing to the social and economic progress of the city. The course thus aims to train professionals in the sustainable design and management of urban open spaces. These professionals will possess cultural knowledge, soft skills, and technical competencies; they will play a strategic role in collaboration with other public and private entities in the complexity of urban design; they will act as facilitators of participatory processes and local social activation; they will be aware of the economic and financial sustainability of design. These professionals will be able to: - Analyze different urban contexts and the elements that influence and shape collective spaces to provide solutions to contemporary social, cultural, and economic needs; - Equip, make welcoming and attractive, and attribute functional and symbolic value to the urban spaces of contemporary cities; - Design structures and furniture systems, communication systems, materials and lighting, flows, and colours useful for public spaces; - Temporarily set up urban spaces for cultural or commercial events, exhibitions, festivals, and shows; - Activate existing public spaces, making them vibrant and community-oriented through collaborations with institutions and informal citizen networks; - Manage co-design, co-construction, and co-management processes, fostering community involvement and participation in the management of proximity spaces; - Objectively and measurably evaluate projects, assessing the social and economic benefits of urban transformation.
