The crisis events (war, pandemic) change all the assumptions and the conditions of our life. The proliferation of COVID-19 is a paradigmatic recent example of a crisis which has an ongoing global social, political and economic impact. The workshop aims to explore the impact of such critical events on cultural heritage. It is divided into two sessions. The morning session focuses on the economic impact of the global crisis, examining events from different points of view (e.g., supply chain and market disruption, etc.); further, this session highlights the effect of these events on protecting and enhancing cultural heritage, focusing on a case study. The afternoon session consists of interactive modules within a lab environment and including student participation. The session will conclude with a roundtable in which the results of the session are shared among the participants.
The global pandemic affects fiscal and monetary policies, gross national production, trade policy, business cycles, manufacturing chains, employment, and social policies. The large macroeconomic shock stemming from the crisis can affect both supply and demand. Potential output typically reflects supply conditions in the economy, such as changes in capital and labor's key production inputs and productivity. The disruptive impact is accentuated due to the physical and virtual interdependence of global networks. Many companies (and governments) are ill-prepared for the dramatic effects of these events. When facing a crisis with high environmental complexity and turbulence, firms may need organizational structures and strategies that facilitate significant changes. During such turbulent and volatile circumstances, agility is fundamental to survival. It reflects the ability of an organization to respond to new or changing needs or availabilities and refine its current positions (regarding, e.g., production, efficiency, selection, implementation, and execution).On the other side, the crisis can be characterized non only as a disruptive period of instability but also as a moment of accelerated diffusion of digital technologies, micro-level initiatives, and innovation. The program focuses on preserving heritage, which is among the hardest hit by the crisis because of the lack of funding, limited access to historical, archaeological cultural sites, suspension of excavation. Some contributions underline ¿complementarities' between culture and other policy sectors (e.g., beauty is fundamental for people's well-being; education can benefit from advances in cultural sectors, the advent of new digital tools, sustainable tourism, etc.).  Conservation at Tell Mozan, ancient Urkesh (Syria), is presented as a case study expressing a very positive result of a new strategy of archaeology approach. During the group labs, the students will choose among different topics to contribute and discuss. At the end of these sessions, there will be a roundtable on the main issues discussed by the groups with the participation of representatives of international organizations.
