Chemistry, materials and nanotechnologies

The subject of nanotechnologies, nanosciences and materials will certainly represent one of the research branches of greatest strategic interest during the first few decades of this century. This has been proven by the great attention paid to this sector by the European Union’s 6th Framework programme. Equal attention is paid on a national level: 5 out of the 11 Centres of Excellence co-financed by the MEUR in 2003 are focussed on these subjects. One of these, the ‘Engineering of Nanostructured Surfaces and Materials’ Centre of Excellence was, in actual fact, set up at the Politecnico di Milano. At the University, we also pay great attention to this matter, involving various different departments with around 40 research groups working in the sector.
