Electronics, information and telecommunications have brought about the technological revolution that has marked the late 20th century, giving rise to the so-called ‘information society’. The Politecnico di Milan has played a lead role in this technological revolution, on a national and international level. Since the arrival of the very first computer in Italy in the war aftermath, thanks to the pioneering research and far-sightedness of prof. Luigi Dadda, sector research has developed and differentiated, covering a wide range of subjects. These range from the technologies of electronic devices to signal processing systems, electromagnetism and data transmission, telecommunication networks, computer hardware architecture and software (algorithms, programming languages, databases), man-machine interaction, computer systems, artificial intelligence and independent robotic systems. The research involves both the technological and methodological aspects, as well as the impact of the applications on the organisational structure. Research is mainly carried out by the Department of Electronics and Information, although important contributions are also made by other departments and in particular by the Department of Managerial Engineering and the Department of Industrial Design, Arts, Communication and Fashion (INDACO). The CEFRIEL consortium has proved to be a key link in the strategy of research and technological transfer in the University sector, dealing with research, innovation and training.
