The developed research has considered some relevant themes concerning contemporary urban planning and architectural design, linked to the changes caused by the historical processes and the complex and innovative phenomena which had interested urban and territorial status, occurring in metropolitan areas in Europe and worldwide, where settlement dynamics lead to the disintegration and estrangement of large areas of high urban and environmental value, also due to the acceleration of street, transportation, and technological infrastructures. Purpose of the dealed research is the restoration of the strategic importance of architectural-urban-environmental design as an interscalar procedure foreshadowing a new identity between formal structures, utilization contents, and functional requirements, thus restoring the areas of urban socialization, residential symbolic reference points, infrastructures’ ways of expression, and recovering the value of residential environments (historical-artistic-natural) urbanization resources.The research has the aim of creating, in operative terms, a scientific support for the public administrations and for the private operators acting in the field of urban and metropolitan systems hit by innovation and modernization processes; as defining guidelines for town and landscape planning and as at the level of detailed planning of spaces and architectures. Research activity in this four-year period dedicated itself to the paradigmatical aspects of the territorial transformation in the padan area and in similar European situations, in Public and Private administrations advices in projectual application during some competitions; in publishing of reports and books about theoretical topics and comparison with European and Italian casestudies. Moreover, the research activity supported the organization of international Seminars, Summer workshops (L.I.P.A.U.- Bergamo) and of two editions of the II level Master Course “Strategic design for the enhancement of architectural, urban and environmental resources” at Politecnico di Milano- Facoltà di Architettura e Società (P6-P11).
