The research group activity is focused on two main areas strongly related. On one hand, the research activity aims at analyzing the main topics of corporate finance; on the other hand, the focus is upon main trends and evolution of financial markets and institutions. Hereby, they’re described through the most important topics: - Evolution of the Italian banking system: during last decades, and in an increasing way during last few years, the Italian Banking System has gone under a very dramatic consolidation process. M&A activity has involved a lot of banks. At the beginning, larger Italian banks bought smaller ones; in the last few years, some Italian large banking groups were target or bidder in international M&A deals. It’s important to verify how this process can change banking business models, efficiency and competitiveness; - Italian Exchange is ever and ever targeted to small and mid size companies, that are the most important, in terms of number, for the Italian economy. In this area, the focus is upon listing techniques, institutional and operating aspects; - Corporate governance in listed companies and main effects on stocks values. The research thesis is: “Does an effective corporate governance maximize companies’ valuation?”. It’s an important topic for the Italian market, as in general around the world. Investors need transparency and good corporate governance models. The research projects aim at assessing in terms of scoring the quality of the corporate governance models and the connections with companies’ values; - Private equity: one of the most significant financial problems of the small and mid size Italian companies is represented by their low level of capitalisation. Adding to this, they have many challenges (innovation, internazionalization, growth, …) to face on that need a lot of financial resources and specific competences. The research activity looks at the potential role of the private equity funds both as financing and as management solutions. In particular, the focus is upon the fund raising process, the criteria for selecting companies, the management activity and the way-out solutions; - Related to previous point, some research activities are focused upon the family business world, that is very significant for the Italian economy. Some important topics are intergenerational change, wealth protection, organizational changes, …; - Asset management, with a specific focus on alternative investments; increasing activities are coming from the needs that investors show to have a better way of building their financial portfolios. Alternative investments such as hedge funds, real estate funds… give good results and lower risk levels in particular looking at the long term period; - Public models for supporting infrastructure and companies: the role of the regional financial companies. The research activity is on public private partnership that can support financing and development both for infrastructure 50 and companies in a regional context. Some main topics are project financing, funds of funds, securitisation, ….
