The activity of this small unit has to be considered under the extended umbrella of the EC Medici Framework. Main activities carried out last year, organized in three main themes, may be summarised as follows: publication of the first activity report of the EU directives working group running under the MEDICI umbrella (book); publication of the third report on “long term preservation of digital content”; second phase of the INTERREG 3A project FOCUS Insubria (ITA/SWISS). P.I.C. INTERREG III A Misura 3.1 and projects with Province of Milano. A background research theme on “digital content and services” is still ongoing in both the framework of the MEDICI and Industrial Design Faculty. The main focus of the activity is on innovation in the field of culture and more specifically cultural heritage. Two of the current lines are directly derived from the long term activity in the field of ICT, both long term preservation (projects with Province of Milan) and FOCUS methodology are in some way a follow up of this background. The problem of digital fragility, even if already known about, is still a “Sword of Damocles’” for digital archives and others. The activity in the field of EU directives and cultural heritage is a sub task of the working group on Monuments and archaeological sites launched some twelve years ago care of MEDICI. On the way to defining and developing new tools for both monument conservation and optimisation, we were faced with the impact of EU directives and the consequent attempt to provide a uniform approach to such problem. The book on EU directives has been requested and adopted by a number of EU organisations (e.g. ICOMOS UK, Monomentenwacht NL, Norvegian Ministry of Culture).
