Prof. Colorni is the Rector delegate for e-learning activities and the president-director of Centre METID (Methods and Innovative Technologies for Didactics), http://www.metid.polimi.it : METID produces innovation and didactical supports using the “new” technologies of ICT and multimedia. For this reason, in the following we briefly explain the projects of METID in e-learning, with some link to the corresponding webpages. Politecnico di Milano, for its history and spread configuration, was naturally induced to sounding out opportunities offered by online education. Its various regional campuses (Milan, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Mantova and Piacenza) represented a strong reason to virtually reduce the distances between students and lecturers in the extended network. Moreover Politecnico is a technical University, so it is significant the presence of a Centre that deals (in a structurated way) didactical innovation, technological exploration, multimedia support. These interests and needs led to the founding of METID Centre "to provide support for teachers in didactical innovation via the use of computer, multimedia and telecommunications technologies". Today, METID is the university Centre devoted to the development of methods and projects in distance learning sector, width model experimented and promoted in a wide set of projects. In recent years METID obtained some significant acknowledgements: in 2004 Politecnico was indicated by EU as one of the 8 “best practices” in Virtual Universities; in the same year the Online Degree in Computer Engineering (se project IOL, in the following) was certified by CampusOne, the quality project of CRUI (the Italian Rector Conference); moreover the Centre is certified ISO 9001:2000 for e-learning services.
