The research focus of the research group leaded by Prof. Zich is the analysis, optimization and design of wireless systems for different kinds of real life possible applications, from satellite communications to wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring. It must be remembered, however, that the research focus of a research group is very hardly a constant function of time, and, in fact, it is not a constant dealing with the here considered research group. Even if all the research activities that had been carried out in the past and that are now still active can be inscribed properly in the general framework of the Wireless System area, it can be seen looking at the research product list a natural evolution of the different personal interests suggested by the different external stimuli and open questions proposed by the national and international scientific and industrial communities. In particular, while the research funding details are usually synchronous with the evolution of the main research focus, the research products are shifted in time by at least one or more years, due to the long publication times on the international journals, and this is the reason why it is necessary here to remember what is the scientific background of the WS research group, because part of the hereby listed products are, even if in the framework of the Wireless System, related to scientific activities that already passed their climax of attention in the here considered time slot. The scientific background of the research group has important roots both in the EMC community, since Prof. Zich has been appointed Associate Editor of the IEEE EMC Transaction for the 1998-2001 term, and specifically in the radiated aspects of EMC, including both interference modelling, such as lightning discharge and shielding, and in the Microelectronic community, where in particular Prof. Gandelli was active in the previous years. Starting from these topics, both by the way extremely important for all the Wireless Systems real-life applications, and that gave a lot of significant scientific results even in the here considered time slot, in the following years among all the possible aspects of this wide area of research a specific attention has been devoted to both the hardware design aspects, mainly focused on the antenna and RF systems design, and the software, such as optimization strategies for the routing, the data collecting, the data processing. Different research projects have been carried out in this context by the WS group, most of them through scientific cooperation with other outstanding research groups all over the world, e.g., for what concerns the antenna design and the electromagnetic propagation phenomena, with the Politecnico di Torino, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, Università di Firenze, Genova, Pavia, South East University Nanjing, China, and with the University of Pennsylvania, USA, for what concerns wireless sensor networks, a significant application that have been considered is the environmental control network management for marine applications, in collaboration with the Centre for Marine Studies of the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.
