The security and the quality of the electric power systems are the topics where the research work of this group is mainly concentrated. In fact, security and quality can affect the planning and the operation of the power systems giving them additional values in the view of the competitive electricity market. The research activity deals with the following innovative issues: · In the area of the “Security” 1. Optimization of power systems: The research activity deals to the optimization of voltage profiles (Optimal Reactive Power Flow) in the presence of Hierarchical Voltage Control (in particular, secondary voltage regulation), adopting both advanced numerical methods (interior point) and Artificial Intelligence tools, like Genetic Algorithms, Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks. 2. Market operation: The research deals with economic compensation for the ancillary service of the reactive power; the zonal model adopted in several electricity markets, included the Italian one; and new methods based on a Monte Carlo probabilistic procedure for the evaluation of the total transfer capability. 3. Market and environment, recently emphasized by the market of green certificates and the emission trading according to the Kyoto protocol. The research activity developed deals with setting baseline emissions, which is one of the principal tasks involved in awarding credits for greenhouse gas emission mitigation projects under the Clean Development Mechanism. 27 · In the area of “Power Quality” 1. System modeling for disturbance propagation analysis. The research deals with the use of Park transformation for electric line models in presence of harmonics, interharmonics, unbalances. 2. Active compensation devices and power conditioners. The research deals with these components regarding both the hardware configuration and the control strategies. In particular, UPS applications are investigated with a safety analysis on different operating conditions. 3. Distributed generation. The study is relevant to the low voltage high quality DC distribution systems with the analysis of storage devices, system performance, voltage profile, safety and system protection. Technical and economic impact are investigated considering the quality of the power delivered to the end users and the integration of renewable sources. The extension of these studies it is also performed in the area of power systems for transportation. The research is focused on the security and voltage quality in the new High Speed Railways (300 km/h) electric supply, using stochastic models tested on measurement reports. The impact of the electric train line supply on the other technology systems, in particular the signaling one, is investigated through both simulation activity and experimental on site measurements and applications.
