Tissue Engineering represents a new approach to tissue and organ regeneration and replacement. Within this interdisciplinary field our main research activity in the period 2003-2006 focused on various aspects of cartilage tissue engineering, including: - investigation of mechanobiological processes underlying engineered tissue development; - design of advanced culture systems, so-called bioreactors, to reproduce controlled culture environments, providing complex mechanical stimuli to the developing tissue - development and testing of optimized micro-structured scaffolds for three-dimensional tissue culture and computational modeling of mass transport and the cell mechanical microenvironment within such structures; - development and clinical trial of new protocols for molecular imaging of regenerating cartilage, based on magnetic resonance imaging; - permeation, compression and shear tests on tissue engineered cartilage samples at various culture times; - coupling between the experimental data and the numerical models developed for articular cartilage (see Micromechanics of Biological Structures) in order to follow the matrix production (proteoglycans and collagen) during culture time
