Soil pollution and remediation technologies
Research focus
The Peer review has evaluated this group as Average
The group has been formed only recently. Research activities include the evaluation of contaminant fate and transport in the environment and related risks, and technical feasibility, according to the following main axes: ? Contaminant fate and transport modeling and related risks - Modeling of transport and fate phenomena in subsoil and groundwater is an effective tool to foresee how far the contaminants will migrate in deep soil and dissolved plumes will extend if no engineered controls or source zone reduction measures are implemented; risk analysis is also necessary to estimate related dangers for human health. Evaluation of performances of some analytical and numerical multi-dimensional, multiphase, multi-component models was assessed for different case studies, pollutants and synthesis organic molecules. ? Technical feasibility - Treatability tests were carried out to evaluate performances of different ex situ and in situ biological and physico-chemical treatments. Solid (biopile and land farming) and slurry phase biological systems were applied on soils contaminated by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs); aerobic and anaerobic slurry phase treatments were tested on PAH, polychlorobiphenyl (PCB) and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contaminated lagoon sediments; lab scale tests were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of an in situ bio-barrier towards methyl tert-butyl ether dissolved in groundwater. Thermal desorption treatments were carried out on PAH contaminated soils; physical and chemical soil washing tests were performed on soils and sediments contaminated by toxic metals and PAHs; chemical oxidation was tested on PAH, PCB and TPH contaminated lagoon sediments.
