The seminar is aimed at reflecting about contemporary changing features of “public” spaces and public services in the urban environment. We need to find new paradigms for the interpretation of the rise of spaces (open spaces and built environment) which are no longer clearly definable as “public”, related to retail, cultural or leisure activities, workplaces, coffee houses, nodes of related public transport. Reasoning about their status, accessibility in space, in time and in relation to ICTs, about mixed uses and users and about the disappearance of the traditional functionalist divisions between housing, work and leisure time is necessary to change our approach as planners and designers and to update the traditional governance structures.
The seminar is programmed to host two activities: on Monday April 8th a workshop aimed at a discussion about recent redevelopment projects which have significantly changed the patterns and features of the network of public spaces in Milan, following a visit with the invited hosts and introduced by some presentations realized by two research Laboratories of DAStU; on April 9th a public Conference aimed at the presentation of the recent developments in the research of prominent scholars in the field of public spaces analysis and design.
