Visiting Professors and Research Fellows from any of the Countries listed below do not require visas for stays up to 90 days (Council Regulation no. 539 of 15.03.2001).
They may enter Italy stating business as the reason of their stay in Italy.
Visiting Professors, arriving directly from countries that do not apply the Schengen agreement, fulfil the obligation to make the declaration of presence pursuant to art. 1, paragraph 2 of Italian Law 28 May 2007, no. 68, when entering Italian State territory.
Fulfilment of the obligation is certified by the fact that the border police stamp the visiting professor’s travel document with the uniform Schengen entry stamp.
Moreover, Visiting Professors who wish to travel back and forth between Italy and other countries, thus not remaining permanently in Italy and entering more than once, are permitted to do so provided that the sum of the days in which they effectively remain in Italy does not exceed 90 days.
After spending a total of 90 days in Italy, foreign citizens must return to their country of origin and may enter Italian territory only after a period of 90 days has passed.
The countries whose citizens are exempt from the need for a visa, as explained above, are:
Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, South Korea, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Japan, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Singapore, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela.
