Entry and Stay in Italy

Visiting Professors/Scholars who belong to one of the States in the European Union may enter Italian territory for self-employed work or employment are not subject to any particular requirements or restrictions.

Registration at the Registry Office

Application by citizens of the European Union for registration at the Registry Office is required by law 3 months after entry into Italian State territory. All EU citizens except diplomatic and consular personnel must fulfil this requirement. For Visiting Professors suitable documentation certifying employment by the Politecnico di Milano must be presented by booking an appointment at the Registry Office.
This can be done in one of these ways:

  • applying online through the municipal website www.comune.milano.it using the link  “servizi on line" (on-line services) 

    or
  • going directly to one of the Registry Offices listed below, where successively the appointment will be made. 

Opening hours: Monday - Friday 8.30 am-1.00 pm / 2.30-3.30 pm.

Family and Accompanying Relatives

The right to entry into Italy of relatives of Citizens of the European Union is governed by the same regulations applied to entry into Italy of the citizens themselves.

Relatives entitled to stay in Italy for family reunion with an EU citizen are:

  • spouse
  • a partner who has entered into a partnership registered under the law of a Member State with the EU citizen
  • direct descendents of the citizen or his/her spouse, if aged under 21 years or dependent upon the couple
  • direct ascendants of the citizen or his/her spouse provided that they are dependent upon the couple.

The EU citizen entitled to stay must demonstrate to earn an adequate income, equal to the annual social allowance, increased by half for every relatives who wants to be joined.

EU citizen relatives can enter Italy without complying with any formalities and then go to the Registry Office for registration with the following documentation:

  • valid identity document or passport
  • document certifying the person’s status as a relative of the EU citizen
  • receipt of the application for registration at the Registry Office of the EU citizen
  • evidence that the EU citizen earns sufficient resources for himself and his family.

Non-EU relatives to enter Italy - where they comes from a country which has provided the visa requirement for entry - must submit an application for a visa at the Italian Embassy providing the following documentation:

  • valid identity document or passport
  • document certifying the person’s status as a relative of the EU citizen
  • receipt of the application for registration at the Registry Office of the EU citizen
  • evidence that the EU citizen earns sufficient resources for himself and his family.

The visa will be issued free of charge and are given priority. Once entered in Italy the relatives have to go to the police offices, depending on the place of residence, to apply for a residence for a relative of an EU citizen, valid for 5 years.
