Overview of Como Campus

The Como Campus is the "oldest" of the University's territorial Campuses.

Founded in 1989, thanks to collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and the Como Industrial Union, the Como Campus has been working for more than fifteen years - training professionals, junior and senior managers and promoting innovation and technology transfer by means of its research and laboratory activities which have been placed at the disposal of business enterprises and institutions.

In 2005, the Como Campus research activities resulted in the Center of Excellence for Research and Technology and Organizational Transfer being set up. The Center has been active in areas such as E-Government (with a strong technology transfer to local entities), promotion of new companies, web and multimedia applications, communication technology  (with particular applications to teaching, also in collaboration with schools), sound engineering and design (in collaboration with the Conservatory of Como), geomatics technologies and methodologies, and technologies for the textile and wood-furniture districts.

The quality of the results which have been obtained is attested to by the good number of firsts that the Como Campus holds inside Politecnico and in the national and international panorama:

  • It boasts the first Italian On-line University Degree, judged by the European Community as among the eight best E-learning experiences in all of Europe
  • It hosts the information technologies research group which produced the first patent in the University's history acquired by a company which was interested in its commercial exploitation
  • It has one of Italy's most advanced nano-technology laboratories, the L-Ness laboratory, in which there is a "clean room" which is also placed at the disposal of the businesses of the territory
  • It hosts the Geomatics Laboratory - a research laboratory in both the area of statistical data processing and interpretation methods, as well as various sectors of geodesy - selected to become an ESA Center for the analysis of the mission Earth Explorer-GOCE, the satellite of the European Space Agency which has been recently launched into space
  • It possesses StudioLab (website in Italian only), Italy's first experimental recording studio dedicated to advanced research for musical production; constructed by the Image and Sound Processing Group, Sound and Music Computing Lab (ISPG-SMC) of Politecnico and managed in collaboration with the "Giuseppe Verdi" Musical Conservatory of Como, the studio is intended to host artists interested in musical production of a high technological content.

The strong presence of foreign students, as a percentage, has led to all courses of the Master of Science programs in Management Engineering, in Computer Engineering as well as in Environmental and Geomatic Engineering being taught in English.
